How to Transfer Your Electricity Connection When Moving to a New House

    JackBy JackAugust 5, 2024No Comments4 Mins Read

Moving to a new house is an exciting milestone but comes with its own set of tasks and responsibilities. One crucial task is transferring your electricity connection to your new address. A smooth transfer will get you settled in your new home with minimal hiccups. In this blog, we will guide you through the steps needed to transfer your electricity connection efficiently.

    Excitement and the Challenges

Moving to a new house means a new beginning, new surroundings and new experiences. But in the fun there’s a list of practical tasks to get on with, such as updating your address, packing and making sure all your utilities including electricity are transferred over. Do this ahead of time and you’ll avoid the headaches and have your new home ready to live in from day one.

Step 1: Notify Your Current Electricity Supplier

The first step in moving your electricity is to notify your current electricity supplier. This should be done well in advance, ideally a few weeks before your move date. Contact customer service or visit their website to find the right form for this.

    Key Details to Note:

    • Your current address
    • The date you will be moving out
    • Your new address
    • The date you want the electricity to be turned off at your old address and on at your new address

Step 2: Clear Any Outstanding Bills

Before moving your electricity, make sure all outstanding bills are paid. Unpaid bills will delay the transfer process. Request a final bill from your current provider that includes all charges up to your move out date.

Step 3: Provide Access for the Final Meter Reading

Your electricity provider will need to take a final meter reading at your old address to get the final bill accurate. Coordinate with them to schedule this reading. If you can’t be present, arrange for someone else to access the meter.

    Step 4: Gather Required Documents

When moving your electricity, you will need to provide several documents to your new electricity provider. These are:

    • Proof of identity (e.g. driver’s license, passport)
    • Proof of ownership or tenancy of the new property (e.g. lease agreement, sale deed)
    • Final bill from old address
    • Completed application form for new electricity connection (usually available on their website)

Step 5: Choose a New Electricity Provider (if needed)

If you’re moving to a different area served by another electricity provider, you’ll need to choose a new provider. Research different providers to find one that suits you best. Once you’ve chosen one, contact the new provider to start the connection process.

Step 6: Apply for New Connection

Apply for a new electricity connection with your new provider and submit the required documents. This can be done online, by mail or in person at a customer service centre. Always ensure all your information is correct to avoid unexpected delays.

Step 7: Book a Connection Appointment

After you’ve applied, the new provider will book a connection appointment. Be at your new house on the day of the appointment to let them into the meter and to make sure everything is set up right.

    Step 8: Check the Connection

Once the electricity is connected, check everything is working. Check all electrical appliances and fixtures have power. If there are any issues, contact your new provider ASAP to sort it out.

Top Tips for a Smooth Move

    • Plan Ahead: Start the transfer process well in advance to avoid last minute stress.
    • Keep Records: Keep copies of all correspondence and receipts for the transfer.
    • Stay Informed: Check in with both your old and new providers regularly to make sure everything is on track.
    • Update Address: Don’t forget to update your address for all other utilities and services too.
